Education

I received my Bachelor of Arts (BA) degree in Intensive Literature--Creative Writing (Poetry) from the University of California, Santa Cruz in December 2015. Intensive means that as a literature student, I also studied in two foreign languages (Italian and Sanskrit). My major GPA was 3.7.

Experience

-- I was well-respected by my peers and professors as a student of creative writing, and received good criticism as a poetry writer. I am well-versed in the many forms that creative writing assumes and can teach these to other students (e.g. poetic verse, free-form or experimental poetry, haiku, sonnets, meter, rhyme, Asian poetry, bi-lingual poetry, etc.). For my Senior Thesis, I created a book of poetry called "Brain Lot Mantras" which fused poetry and Sanskrit with a used car lot near my house. -- I have extensive knowledge in essay writing and formatting (MLA, Chicago style) and truly enjoy editing essays or creative works for grammatical correctness, clarity, neatness of argument, etc. I am also adept in navigating texts, conducting close-reading, and formulating/formatting theses. -- I have taken courses in both Italian and Sanskrit (an Indo-European language), but consider my interests to be more geared toward the latter. I have written a final paper in which I used my knowledge of Sanskrit to trace the concept of mantra through various lenses. I can read and write in Sanskrit, and am still semi-conversational in Italian. -- In Summer 2013, I studied abroad for two months in Florence, Italy. I took part in an 8-week intensive language program, in which I completed levels 4-6 of Italian. I also attended Apicius Culinary Institute where I learned to make traditional Italian dishes. -- I have some tutoring experience through a local tutoring company, in which I helped students prepare for the SAT exams and helped with timed-writing exams. -- I have in-classroom experience as a Teacher's Assistant for a UCSC Frosh Literature course (Merrill College core course) in Fall 2014. As a TA, I held weekly office hours, assisted the professor in lecture, graded writing assignments/essays, met weekly with the professor, and was present in every class/plenary. I was a resource for the students and was a mediator between students and professor. I also conducted one guest lecture and was an active and present participant in the course. -- I have additional classroom experience as a Student Volunteer in a 3rd grade classroom at Westlake Elementary. As a volunteer, I assisted the teachers' in class presentations, helped with grading assignments, helped ensure students were on task, set up bulletin boards/displays (e.g. "Cursive vs. Computers"), assisted in clerical tasks, and was a friendly assistant who helped where was needed. In addition, I kept a course notebook and studied the classroom setting for my own college course. -- I have experience as a Copy-Editor for the UCSC student-run paper City on a Hill Press, where I edited copies in APA formatting and checked them for clarity, concision, and neatness. -- I want to tutor because I have the innate desire to share knowledge with others in a way that's nuanced, creative, effective, and empathetic. I want learning to be something that helps nurture students and encourages them to look at the world through different lenses or points of reference.

Hobbies

-- I am a lover of words, literature, reading and writing in its myriad forms. I currently work at Logos Books and Records, where I find joy in being the sole organizer of the store's Eastern Philosophy section. I am also a lover of tea (cha), and work at Hidden Peak Tea House, an Asian-style tea house, where I can learn about tea and share its art (gong-fu cha) with others. -- I spend my time writing, reading, riding my bike, swimming, playing guitar, studying the I Ching/ancient Eastern philosophy/whatever else strikes my fancy, having tea with friends, and have a voracious appetite for learning (through the aforementioned, observing, and in an academic setting when possible). -- I intend on attending graduate school to receive my PhD and then teach Literature, Creative Writing, or Philosophy at the college level. -- Currently, I am working on a zine and allowing myself to be in the present moment!
