EducationI graduated from the University of Dayton in December 2012 with a BA in International Relations- Global Economic Development and a GPA of 3.96. It was early in high school when I really turned a corner academically, learned better study and organizational skills, and started to do really well in school.
ExperienceI have worked as a tutor for years, both in the US and abroad, and with both elementary and high school age students. Some of my students have been in traditional schools and others have been home schooled. I am happy to help with homework or to create a personalized class/curriculum for a semester-long course.
After graduating from college, I lived for a year in Guatemala, where I learned to speak fluent Spanish and helped teach a pre-school class in a small Mayan village. The kids, who spoke the local Mayan language, Tz'utujil, were learning Spanish as a second language. It was both a humbling and highly rewarding experience. I was also living in a cabin without electricity or plumbing, which was a unique, grounding experience.
When I came home from Guatemala, I moved here to Santa Cruz. I have worked with the Santa Cruz School District as a tutor for ESL students, and also privately for students in Math, English, Spanish, and more- I have been connected with a bunch of great families and kids through University Tutor! For most of the past year I have been traveling and I only recently came home to Santa Cruz. This year I spent 5 months traveling in Southeast Asia and then 2 months this summer working on a small organic farm up in Vermont. So it's been a crazy, wonderful year but I am happy to be back in Santa Cruz. While I was gone, I kept working online with one of my students. We worked together on an English course to improve his reading comprehension and writing skills, and lately I have been working with him to help him improve his study and organizational skills. At the moment, I am actually staying at his family's house and driving him around to all his homeschool classes while his parents are traveling abroad. I have developed an awesome relationship with the kid, as both a teacher and a mentor, and his family over the years- thanks University Tutor!
I was lucky to learn good study skills and organization from a young age. In Guatemala, I largely taught myself to speak fluent Spanish by translating books and music, and in Southeast Asia I learned to speak really respectable Lao in a similar manner. I love tutoring because it gives me a chance to pass on these study skills to other students, who can use them to pursue whatever they are passionate about. Whether it's learning how to make short-term or long-term to-do lists, how to use a planner, or how to memorize vocabulary words, a lot of students simply need some guidance on how to get started with good study habits.
I would be happy to provide references or a formal resume upon request.
HobbiesI love to go for hikes, bike, travel, do garden/farm work and my newest hobby is baking. I learned it at the farm where I worked this summer in Vermont. While growing up in St. Louis, MO, my two older brothers and I were sports fanatics, so I can definitely relate to a love for sports, too, and I still like to play for fun. Basically, I am hardworking and have my life together, but also young and easy to relate to!
